PHAbio APP - Polyhydroxyalkanoate Biopolymers from Animal Waste Fats for the Production of Value Added Biobased and Biodegradable Bioplastic Materials

PHABIO APP aims the development of a closed circle for the production, processing, recycling and biodegradation of novel PHA biopolymers from biowaste, in particular fat waste. It also stands for an acceleration of an industrial commercialization of these novel PHA bioplastic materials. The process needs to be operated in a flexible manner with respect to the applied feedstock in order to reduce costs and improve sustainability and, in this way, support regional closed circles.
PHAs are alternatives to conventionally produced plastics. Besides their biodegradability, they are also biocompatible, which makes them suitable for medical applications. Ralstonia eutropha is applied as model organism for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and recombinant strains for production of the novel PHA poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyhexanoate) [P(HB-co-HHx)], with different monomers concentrations are applied. Recombinant strains that are most suitable for the production process are selected based on batch and fed-batch cultivation studies with an automated liquid-handling platform in parallel cultivation systems in the mL-range. Also mixed carbon feed studies will be performed to compensate variation in feedstock availability in industrial scale.
